8/5/2023 0 Comments Battle of the isonzo memeHe had his reasons, and I became possessed with knowing what they were."Ĭadorna was terrible but even with a competent general in charge getting out of the Alps was not going to be easy and the Italians have a lot of other problems. His face was like the page of a book written in a language I didn't understand, but he wasn't mindless. And as I watched, I became more and more sure of it. Why was he smashing all those beetles? What did he get out of it? I could observe him, watch him the way men watch animals to come to a deeper understanding of their behavior. I'm reminded of Tyrion Lannister's story of Orson Lannister: "I was curious. And if they can take Trieste by late 1916 to mid 1917, then the Austrian position is much more difficult.Įdit: At best, Cadorna is a decent commander who's out of his depth and (a.) can't admit it, especially in the light of his illustrious father's career, and (b.) can't think his way out of a situation he didn't plan for, which results in shit like 11 fucking battles at the same fucking spot for two years, all of them costly losses! At worst, he's the embodiment of all the worst traits of the Italian army except laziness and corruption, he was a secret Chaos cultist and this was his sacrifice to Khorne. I think an earlier appreciation of artillery power versus the mass charge could have led to the Italian front at least costing vastly fewer lives, or at least making those lives count for more miles. Also, I would note that the Isonzo campaign was mostly fought on the Venetian lowland, and was aimed at securing Trieste and Gorizia, also located in the lowlands. Basically what I am saying is they could have had a general staff of Hannibal, Alexander the Great, and Genghis Kahn and nothing would have fundamentally changed because Italy attacking over the Alps into Austria was only going to end in a bloody stalemate.Ĭlick to shrink.Yeah, you can say that, but the fact remains that after Cadorna left the scene and Diaz got the army back in shape, the new tactics drastically improved Italian fortunes. Now in Italy's case they had all these issues everyone else had on the western front except they also had to fight over a mountain range which just magnified all these problems 100 fold and on top of all that Austria had the far better terrain to defend. You could achieve partial results and that frequently happened but the enemy would just counterattack and retake there ground before you could really secure it. There are various reasons for this but basically the technology combined with the massive armies made it impossible to pull off any sort of really successful offensives in the Western Front. I get that's its common to blame generals for how WW1 was fought but the reality is there weren't really any tactics you could do to break the defenses of that time. The thing is I am not certain Italians could even win such a battle. So we get a large naval clash early in the war. If in this OP, Italians are lead by a tactical and strategic genius this move may be anticipated. Their shelling of Italian railways more or less pushed back the Italian mobilization by a month or even a couple. OTL A-H Navy only sailed out in force once and it was a resounding success. So the more likely avenue is trying to win sea control over Adriatic. The problem is that the A-H army would try to counter those new tactics. Some sort of small unit tactic, may be tried. Skill doesn't let you jump over mountain ranges. On the land side of things, I don't actually know what can be done. The number of supplies that got to where it was going was a monumental logistic achievement.ĭisregard I am an Idiot, that fails his reading comprehension skill check. Italians supplying the forces in Africa was as close as pulling miracles out their asses as you can get. The balance of power was far more even than people give credit to. This is a whole alternative history right here, I don't think it will fit in a single thread.įor one cooperation between the Regia Marina and Aeronautica would change a lot of things. You are basically asking what would happen if Italy used all the assets available to it to the best of its abilities, yes?
